چکیده

Differential Diagnosis of Hemolytic Anemia Hemolytic anemia reflects shortened RBC life span due to intravascular, extravascular, or fragmentation hemolysis. Intravascular hemolysis is primarily associated with type 1 hypersensitivity reactions, either idiopathic or secondary to another primary disease. In some cases an infectious intraerythrocytic or epierythrocytic agent or miscellaneous disorders (e.g., severe hypophosphatemia, zinc toxicity, or severe heinz body anemia) are underlying causes. Extravascular hemolysis is usually caused by RBC removal by the mononuclear phagocyte system and often reflects idiopathic primary or secondary immune-mediated mechanisms. In some cases, hemolysis is secondary to heinz bodies, membrane abnormalities, or enzymatic defects, limiting cell energy production (e.g., pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase after exercise induced respiratory alkalosis) and deranging membrane flexibility. Fragmentation hemolysis is associated with shearing effects that damage RBC flexibility crucial for navigating microcirculatory pathways (e.g., vasculitis, hemangiosarcoma, other neoplasia, splenic disease, vena caval syndrome [Dirofilariasis], and DIC).

The use of the rapid osmotic fragility test as an additional test to diagnose canine immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia

BACKGROUND Diagnosing canine immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) is often challenging because all currently available tests have their limitations. Dogs with IMHA often have an increased erythrocyte osmotic fragility (OF), a characteristic that is sometimes used in the diagnosis of IMHA. Since the classic osmotic fragility test (COFT) is time-consuming and requires specialized equipment, ...

Comparison of 4 Direct Coombs' Test Methods with Polyclonal Antiglobulins in Anemic and Nonanemic Dogs for In‐Clinic or Laboratory Use

BACKGROUND Difficulties with the direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and its apparent lack of sensitivity and specificity for immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) in dogs have raised skepticism regarding its diagnostic value. OBJECTIVE To compare different DATs and other hematologic parameters in dogs. ANIMALS Anticoagulated blood samples from 59 nonanemic and 46 anemic dogs (± IMHA) from a r...

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Plasma from Dogs with Immune‐mediated Hemolytic Anemia

BACKGROUND Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are part of the innate immune response and are essential in local pathogen control, but are associated with pathological inflammation, organ damage, autoimmunity, and thrombosis. Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a pro-inflammatory, prothrombotic disease associated with high mortality. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Neutrophil extracellular tra...

Procoagulant Microparticles in Dogs with Immune‐Mediated Hemolytic Anemia

BACKGROUND Studies of some human prothrombotic diseases suggest that phosphatidylserine-positive (PS+) and tissue factor-positive (TF+) microparticles (MPs) might play a role in the pathogenesis of thrombosis or serve as biomarkers of thrombotic risk. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To determine if circulating levels of PS+MP and procoagulant activity (PCA) associated with PS+MPs and TF+ MPs are increa...

Systematic Review of Prognostic Factors for Mortality in Dogs with Immune‐mediated Hemolytic Anemia

BACKGROUND Treatment of dogs with primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is difficult and frequently unrewarding. Prognostic factors have been evaluated in a number of previous studies, and identification of such factors would be beneficial to enable selection of appropriate therapeutic regimens and supportive care. OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study was to undertake a critical ...
